Moor Top - ABV: 3.6%
Moor Top is a bottle conditioned pale ale from Buxton Brewery, made using American hops.
It pours with very little effervescence, leaving a small head that lasts well, albeit with minimal lacing.
I know this is a pale ale, but I wasn't expecting something this pale.! As you can see from my photo, it looks almost like a light lager.
The aroma, however, is nothing like a lager and is packed with dry, citrusy hops.
Flavour-wise, this is almost bordering on sweet though, with a lovely, balanced, fresh bitterness afterwards.
I'm still trying to match a local beer to our local and much loved Glossop Pudding (available from Trace and Sarah at Praze Fine Foods on Glossop High Street), but as yet, all the beers I've tried have overpowered the light, sweet dessert, leaving only the taste of the beer in my mouth, rather than complimenting the pudding's sweetness.
I tried Moor Top with Glossop Pudding, and I reckon this is the closest yet to a potential match, although still not quite right. Sadly, Moor Top's lightness and dry hoppiness on this occasion was slightly overpowered by the pudding's sweetness.
This doesn't detract from what is otherwise a lovely, light session ale though, and I would certainly recommend it...
Verdict: 3.5/5
