Wincle Brewery is based in the small village of Wincle a few miles outside Macclesfield, on the banks of the River Dane in the Peak District. Founded in 2008, Giles and his team have won many awards for their wonderful real ale and most of their beers are named after local Wincle characters.
From their website - "Our whole ethos has always been about brewing the kind of beer that we love to drink ourselves. Following an extensive 4 month course at Brewlab at the University of Sunderland, our first beer rolled off the production line in August 2008 after first being relentlessly critiqued by our ever-growing testing panel."

Old Hag - 5.2% ABV
This 18th century style beer uses lashings of Chocolate malt and subtle Fuggles hops to make a dark, sumptuous and comforting ale.
Apparently, Old Hag was an ancient alehouse on moorland near Wincle. So called because as legend has it, a hare chased over a wall by locals vanished and turned into an old hag.

This stout porter has a lovely warm, chocolatey, maltey fragrance and its flavour only confirms this, along with dark roasted coffee and maybe a hint of dark rum. A lovely, comforting ale that I reckon would be complemented nicely by a strong cheese... A mature Cheddar perhaps.?
Lovely stuff.!
Verdict: 4/5
