Sir Philip - ABV: 4.2%
Sir Philip is a dark amber bitter from Wincle Brewery near Macclesfield in Cheshire. The beer is named after Sir Philip Brocklehurst, who was the Squire of Swythamley Hall near Wincle, an adventurer who accompanied Shackleton aboard The Nimrod to the Antarctic.
This bitter (Wincle's 'standard' bitter) is a lovely, clear bitter with subtle warm notes of toasty malt and a long lasting, creamy head.
The taste almost belies the aroma to be honest, as the subtle malts are taken over by a fresh, hoppy flavour with a long, dry, bitter finish. Very traditional, very smooth and totally delicious.
I've enjoyed a few of Wincle Brewery's beers recently, and without exception, they have all been of exemplary quality and smoothness.
Considering this is their standard, everyday bitter, craft breweries around the UK have a lot to live up to... Brilliant.
Verdict: 4.5/5
