Pedal Power Golden Ale - ABV: 3.4%
Predictable I know, but after today's opening stage of the 101st Tour de France ending in Harrogate, it seemed appropriate to enjoy a refreshing beer (on the cyclist's behalf of course) from that lovely town and report my findings.
Pedal Power Golden Ale is brewed in Yorkshire using Galaxy hops to give it a full bodied flavour and citrusy aroma. It's true that a fresh citrusy aroma is present, but I'd hardly call the flavour full bodied!
There's too much carbonation for a start, and although the aroma is nice enough, the flavour is a tad bland and, dare I say it, a bit watery... with sweet toffee and a light, malty and slightly dry finish.
However... This brew was created deliberately with an ABV of only 3.4%, so it was never likely to blow my preverbial socks off!
So, bearing that in mind, I have to admit that Pedal Power's Golden Ale effectively fulfils its brief - a golden ale that's refreshing and light, and no doubt most welcome after a long bike ride over Côte de Buttertubs and down into Harrogate!
Verdict: 3/5
